Hemp has a long history as one of the oldest domesticated crops in the world. As a matter of fact, it’s been used to make textiles and paper for thousands of years. A small scrap of hemp fabric dating back to around 8,000 BC is one of the oldest pieces of evidence of human industry. Recently, its popularity has surged since the 2018 Farm Bill passed. Plus, hemp-derived CBD-infused products are on the rise. The hemp industry is on track to be worth $22 billion by 2020. Without further ado, let’s answer some of your questions. What exactly is industrial hemp? How is it different from marijuana? Is it legal? What does it have to do with CBD? Read on to learn more about industrial hemp, where it comes from and why it matters to you.
What is Industrial Hemp?
The term “Cannabis” actually refers to a family of plants. As such, there are many different strains, or varietals, of the cannabis plant. Industrial hemp is an umbrella term for a group of non-psychoactive varieties of the cannabis plant. Though both hemp and marijuana come from the same plant species, they are quite different in use, chemical composition and cultivation method.
Industrial hemp contains extremely low levels of THC, the psychoactive compound found in marijuana infamous for getting users “high.” Hemp is actually bred to contain low levels of THC and high levels of CBD. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a safe, legal and non-intoxicating chemical compound similar to THC (both are cannabinoids, but produce opposing effects). Hemp-derived CBD oil is commonly used as a health supplement for assisting with a variety of medical conditions, including anxiety, depression, insomnia, inflammation and more. Hemp’s stems, flowers and seeds are used in health foods and organic body care (this is where cannabinoids like CBD are located). Unlike marijuana, the hemp plant has a variety of industrial uses, which includes textiles, paper, construction, fuel and food.
Where Does Industrial Hemp Come From?
Industrial hemp is grown legally in most parts of the world. For many decades, Europe was considered the biggest producer of industrial hemp. In the 1990s, many European countries did away with laws banning hemp cultivation. For years, European farmers have cultivated hemp and reaped the benefits of this mighty plant in a number of ways. They are experts as a result, known for producing quality hemp. Naturally, many reputable hemp product manufacturers prefer to source their raw product from European countries.
What about hemp cultivation in the United States? Well, that’s a little bit of a different story. From the 1970s, when hemp was lumped in with marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act, hemp cultivation was illegal in the United States. However, the 2014 Farm Bill paved the way to legal hemp cultivation, though farmers were still extremely limited production-wise. However, the 2018 Farm Bill recently passed, taking hemp off the controlled substances list and making it completely legal to cultivate throughout the United States. The hemp industry is projected to boom as hemp manufacturers can source product directly within the States for commercial uses, cross state lines, etc. Since 2014, hemp production in the U.S. has grown by leaps and bounds. Experts predict the United States will be the world leader in hemp production in the next decade. It certainly seems to be heading that way.
